Oil to gas conversions are becoming increasingly popular. Factors driving this are the price comparisons with oil, the efficiency of new boilers, rebates from energy companies, and the space that is freed up by removing the 275 gallon oil tank. The average home in the Northeast uses 822 gallons of heating oil per year for heat and hot water. Based on recent pricing, this would be a bill of approximately $2,900.00 for the homeowner. The equivalent gas bill would be approximately $1,800.00.  Of course, the efficiency of the boiler must be taken into consideration also. Some units which combine heating and hot water are extremely efficient (with an AFUE rating over 93%). The unit also hangs on your wall to maximize floor space use (see oil to gas conversions page on this website for picture).
The energy companies also offer rebates. Right now, National Grid is promoting oil to gas conversions by offering rebates on various boilers. The rebates come in the form of VISA gift cards and range from $470.00 to %1,335.00. Some of the boilers that are promoted are Burnham Standard Boilers  (hot water and steam), and the high efficiency Alpine Forced Hot Water Boiler (AFUE 95%).
GasNetworks is also offering cash rebates for the installation of high efficiency equipment with or without oil to gas conversions. The programs are currently limited to customers of participating natural gas utilities, which include National Grid and NStar among others. If you want a complete list, visit their website or give Rizzo Plumbing & Heating a call at 781-413-6253.
But before you do anything, visit the Mass Save website to arrange a free energy efficiency audit. Mass Save is an initiative that works with utility companies to promote energy efficiency in the home and business. Once your audit is completed, you can apply for a Mass Save HEAT Loan – that is an interest free loan to make energy efficient improvements to your home (like oil to gas conversions). This is the real deal, many of our customers use this product and are happy to have 5-7 years to pay back the loan with no interest.
If this all sounds interesting to you, give Rizzo Plumbing & Heating a call at 781-413-6253 for more information. We will walk you through the entire process and, of course, we give free estimates on oil to gas conversions! We have office staff dedicated to helping you complete paperwork, get ready for your conversion, keep in touch during the project, and apply for rebates after.
