Selecting bath fixtures is exciting, but please consider the entire process before you make your final choices.
First, let’s address color in toilets, bathtubs, and vanities. If you choose white, this is standard and is usually in stock (or easy to order) and the lowest price point. For instance, the price difference between a white toilet and an almond toilet (beige, cream, buff) can be more than $100.00. This difference translates over to the tub and vanity as well, with the price difference becoming greater with each fixture. Keep in mind that a color can be discontinued, so if replacing one item you may not get an exact match in the future.
Now, let’s talk about finishes. We are seeing an upswing in vibrant brushed nickel and oil rubbed bronze. It is easy to tell by the name that you are going to pay more for one of those finishes than a polished chrome. While choosing a faucet, remember that you will have to match your shower valve and your tub faucet to your vanity faucet. The price difference can add up quickly. The faucet pictured above is a Kohler Loure, designed for a modern, sleek room.
On to our favorite subject, plumbing code. If you are shopping on the internet, you may not be purchasing a bath fixture that meets plumbing code. Plumbing code varies from state to state, and certainly is different in other countries. If a bath tub meets code in Italy, it doesn’t necessarily meet code in Massachusetts. Once the fixture arrives, you may have bought something that you cannot legally install or you may have to pay a plumber to research code and meet with the local plumbing inspector – another expense to add to the bottom line.
Finally, consider installation costs. Choosing bath fixtures that are funky and unique is exciting, but costly. As long as you know your budget, you will be able to decide if this is the right choice for you. Installing a free standing, claw foot tub can be a lot more labor intensive than a standard bath tub. Location, venting, drains, and other plumbing issues should be taken into consideration before you make your final choice.
It is always a good choice to involve your licensed plumber prior to making any purchases. He or she can give you advice in choosing bath fixtures that will keep you within your budget, while satisfying your desire to design something beautiful and functional.
