The plumbing in your home has the potential to help you everyday and it also has the potential to cause severe damage in the event of a plumbing failure. Your plumbing should be equipped with a series of shut offs that isolate parts of the system and stop the flow of water when necessary. If you know where the individual shut offs are located that is perfect, but at least you need to know where the main shut off is so you can stop the flow of water into your home if that becomes necessary.
If you are remodeling a kitchen or bath, it is a good idea to have a discussion with the plumber regarding how many shut offs are needed. Cutting costs by eliminating shut offs is not a good idea. In the future, if you want to change a toilet, faucet, or vanity you need to stop the flow of water first.
When installing or changing your hydronic heating system shut offs are important. In the future, when you boiler needs repair, the shut offs allow the plumber to isolate the unit without spending valuable time (and your money) draining the heating system before performing the actual work.
Take some time to locate your main shut off and do a visual inspection of it. If it is leaking or corroded, it might be time to replace it.
