What is a high efficiency heating system? An obvious answer is a heating system that saves you money and wastes little of the fuel source that supplies its energy. But, how do you figure out which system is the best for you? If a natural gas heating system has an AFUE of 80%, what does that mean?

All natural gas heating systems have an Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating that is expressed in percentages. The higher the AFUE rating, the greater the efficiency and less energy is needed to heat your home.

Some of the new tankless heating systems have energy ratings as high as 91%, you are getting 91 cents worth of heat for your dollar. Compare this to an older standard efficiency unit with a rating of 60% – you are spending 31 cents more on every dollar! This means 31 cents more going up your chimney, and not circulating through your home as heat.  According to Mass Save, a 10% difference in the AFUE rating results in a savings of $115.00 per year- imagine the savings when the AFUE rating has a 31% difference.

The most efficient hot water boilers are considered to have an AFUE rating of 85% or higher, and high efficiency steam boilers have a rating of 82% or higher. High efficiency translates into savings, rebates, and zero percent interest loans. The better ratings will reap you more rewards. Working with Mass Save and GasNetworks and will save you money.

If you are considering switching to a high efficiency heating system, you should contact several licensed plumbers who will inspect your current heating system and provide you with an estimate. The estimate should be a written proposal that outlines the work to be done and the unit that will be installed. This is a large project, so you should feel comfortable with your plumber and have a relationship that encourages discussion and questions. Your plumber should also be able to assist you in navigating various rebates and incentives that are provided for installing a high efficiency heating system.
