Plumbing fixtures and pipes that are lead free are in your future. Starting January 4, 2014 the Safe Drinking Water Act will mandate that any valve, fitting, or fixture coming in contact with potable water (used for drinking and cooking) must be lead-free. Most supply houses have begun selling plumbing products that meet standards. This applies to pipes, pipe fittings, plumbing fittings, and plumbing fixtures. There are exceptions such as toilets, bidets, urinals, fill valves, tub fillers, and other plumbing fixtures not anticipated to be used for human consumption. Why lead free? Studies have demonstrated that long term exposure to lead can pose serious health risks, particularly to children and senior citizens. Lead free pipes and plumbing fixtures are definitely a step in the right direction. Of course, this will come at a cost to contractors and consumers because lead-free products are more expensive to make and, therefore, cost more. If you are in the planning stages of a large project that will be implemented after the deadline, make sure your plumbing contractor is aware of the law and is pricing your project accordingly.
